Another tidbit from Uncommon:

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

This Poor Woman

This poor woman’s backside was featured in the Associated Press’ article titled, Mississippi’s still fattest but Alabama’s closing in.  It would make me feel terrible to know that I was in the article describing the nation’s obesity problem. And since it’s of her backside, does she even have to sign a consent form? I’m sure she (and her friends) know that outfit from the back. Poor woman.

“The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift…It is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.”
~J.K. Rowling (at 2008 Harvard commencement address)

When I was teen, I began shaving my legs* with Gilette Daisy razors. Once, early on, I tried using a Bic women’s razor. It was a mistake. I wound up shaving off a 1-2″ section of skin on the back of my knee. I cried like the little girl I was. Since that fateful day I’ve almost never shaved without my Daisies. Recently I’ve been considering switching to a more earth-friendly option. By that, I mean something that (a) could be recycled or (b) would fill up landfills at a less extraordinary rate.

My options – an electric razor or a less disposable razor. I’ve tried an electric razor in the past and wasn’t impressed. That left me with the less disposable options. I immediately went to the brand I trust – Gilette. I figured these geniuses made the Daisies, certainly they can make other razors with superior functionality (i.e. less skin shaved off). So this weekend I tried the Venus. I must say, I was pleased. No shaving injuries occurred. The handling over the terrain was great. Plus I was able to achieve my goal – I’m putting less garbage in a landfill. I suppose change isn’t always a bad thing.
